Pool Fence Regulations Gold Coast: A Plain-English Guide

Every pool and spa on the Gold Coast must have a compliant barrier and be listed on the Queensland pool safety register. The rules exist for one reason: to stop young children reaching the water unsupervised.

The fence must stand at least 1200 mm high, measured from the ground on the outside. The gap underneath can be no more than 100 mm, so check spots where soil or mulch has washed away.

Gates must swing outward, away from the pool, and close and latch on their own from any open position. Test yours by opening it a little, then fully, and letting go each time.

Keep a 900 mm zone around the outside of the fence clear of anything a child could climb — pot plants, chairs, barbecues, retaining walls and overhanging branches are common reasons pools fail.

If you sell or lease your home, you'll generally need a current pool safety certificate. Booking a check before you list avoids last-minute delays.
